I am a US greencard holder but dont stay in the US for more than 1-2 months a year. From this year onwards I will have all my income from Property Investments (Rental Income) in a foreign country – I have no other business or employment. Do I have to pay US social security and medicare on my income?? Would it be considered a business since I have no other income apart from this?? If yes then what is the rate?? and is there any possible way to avoid paying this?? I do not channel my property investments through a management company – but just hire a person privately to look after my properties and collect rents on time. I pay less than $50 a month to this hired helper.
Also if anyone knows the taxes on Rental income overseas – if my address in the US is in New York State (not NYC).
This would help me decide if I want to keep the Greencard or get rid of it – Please keep in mind that I have no other source of income except my property investments… Thanks a lot.
